Innovation Follow-Up

As I promised yesterday, here is a follow-up on the innovation hearing.  The Florida Broadband News pulls out a great quote from Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fl) that pretty much encapsulates the whole hearing:

"We want to get more bang for the buck when it comes to converting research into high-tech goods and services," he said, "and therefore stimulation to the economy."

The Federal gov't spends a lot of money on basic research and they want their money's worth out of the investment in something tangible.  The political and economic climate dictates that everything be related to jobs. So they want research to equal jobs.  If Congress can say that, then their constituents know that they are working hard to improve the economy.

The sell looks something like this (thanks FBN):

"Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are the seed corn that drives our economy," he said.

Nelson observed that, as markets advance everywhere, leadership in those fields is quickly becoming the hard currency of the 21st Century.
